Triskaidekaphobics beware: this fine Friday the 13th brings us an epic journey of vintage soundscapes from Skrow! newcomer Jorge Marredo, aka Satisfacción Lab. Aido-Hwedo attempts to give loose sonic form to the mythical rainbow serpent of the same name, and displays a fine palette of aural influence, with obvious nods to early ambient, psychedelia and krautrock, with sprinklings of classic sci-fi sounds and tribal flourishes, as filtered through an amalgamation of analogue and digital manipulations. (Think Doctor Who and Can visit the beginnings of earth civilization.)

The result is a highly organic flowing trip that evokes a variety of sonic imagery throughout its engaging ~51 minute continuous duration. Strap yourself in and enjoy the ride.

Xoc - Seibabretsen: Alptraum Kinderleider

This was due out on the more appropriate darkly connotative Ides of March, but things happen that are beyond our control, as Macbeth himself would attest, were his head still attached to his neck and whatnot.

In any event, this would technically be the Skrow! debut of one Jason Cox under his most infamous internet pseudonym, though he’s graced our catalogue several times before as the most excellent clinical noisician Hemostat.

Seibabretsen: Alptraum Kinderleider consists of three epic chunks of psychedelic outsider barbershop fuckery which manage to be engagingly creepy and hilarious at the same time. These tracks are actually medleys of the original recording sessions for Xoc’s Nesterbabies project, which is described quite aptly by the following process: 1. Nintendo song slowed and backward; 2. Nesterbabies sing along; 3. Nesterbabies’ vocals sped up and flipped turned upside down.

Minutes of entertainment!

This release, in the absence of step 3 as mentioned above, has the added bonus of revealing to the perceptive listener the secret lyrics found within the finished Nesterbabies versions. Which, frankly, make this release all the better to blast in one’s car in order to confuse, frighten or otherwise disturb one’s fellow motorists. We get into that kinda thing here. And so should we all. Now go forth and enjoy. And stuff.

We couldn’t resist posting a release on what apocalypse-obsessed, Mayan-misinterpreting alarmists would have you believe to be the last leap day in the age of humankind in this particular plane of existence, so it is only right that it be one by the self-ascribed Bringer of Chaos that calls itself Unikron. As irresistible cosmic forces go, the will of Unikron rivals even that of the most compelling calendrical anomalies.

Today, then, brings us the first single from the forthcoming LP (and a double single at that, nevermind the obvious contradiction in terms), which ethereal whispers swirling deep within our madness-tainted minds suggest may be titled Entropic Sound Part I: Omniversal Eventuality Generator. Foreboding, innit?

“Egg My Bum” delivers a concise display of atmospheric garage spliced with the vocal stylings of a seriously malfunctioning Freddie Mercury robodoppleganger. Its counterpart, “Feels Good Man,” brazenly suggests truth in the wild associative suppositions of one amateur journalist some years ago, and serves the evidence in a twisted fondue of rock, dance, and breakbeats.

Unikron’s conquest of reality is as foregone a conclusion as the heat death of the universe. Of all universes. Surrender yourself and you will be allowed to live a bit longer. Resistance is futile (or useless, depending on your preference). Boink.

Continuing in the spirit of vault releases, here we have Dan Lillie, aka The Sticky Situation, in a far different incarnation. Written and recorded some 8 or 9 years ago, these are mellow, pensive ambient pieces which exhibit a pervasive minimalist influence - Steve Reich’s phasing technique is experimented with quite a bit throughout, for example. This is, perhaps, particularly notable on “One Plus One Plus One,” which deconstructs a famous riff from a certain ubiquitous metal band.

In all, this release gives us 45 minutes of melancholic atmosphere perfect for a quiet afternoon, or evening, or whatever. Put some headphones on and drift away.

Today we present two pieces unearthed from the ‘Lobe vault, which is quickly becoming somewhat vast.  Made almost five years ago before being shelved, lost, and found again, this pair of drones de/reconstruct early versions of then-unreleased Saffron Slumber works, taking his penchant for pleasantly pensive atmosphere and twisting it into something somewhat more sinister.

A bit of doom and gloom to brighten your day.  Loom ominously with your tenth animal of the Chinese zodiac exposed.  Something like that.

Skrow! dutifully and happily welcomes another newcomer to the fold, French improvisational guitar researcher Dongle Doc.  Ça gratte is a 35 minute psychedelic journey into a uniquely organic atmospheric experimental cybermetropolis, in which lurks twisted jazz-blues alleycats, vaguely rock-scented ruffians, seedy semi-sapient drone-noise night clubs, and other sonic creatures too wonderfully terrible to describe.

This day brings us the mighty Skrow! debut of a giant of the progressive chiptune scene, Zan-Zan-Zawa-Veia (hereinafter abbreviated as ZZZV or Zanzan out of my own sheer incorrigible laziness).  With 26 tracks at just under half an hour, this album functions as a sort of cross between an imaginary retro game soundtrack and a collection of 8bit library music.  For example, #082 brings you the Neo Kobe weather report, #075 is the commercial jingle for Mr. Saturn-Os breakfast cereal, #087 is the theme song to the short-lived sitcom I Was a Teenage Robo, #074 takes you to your Mute City Nightly News traffic report… I’ll just leave off there, yeah?  Point being: this is a rapidfire collection of at times catchy, at times elusive, highly image-invoking, always interesting, all around good shit, capped off by an almost-8-minute epic slice of proggy, mathy Zanzan supremeness.  You have nothing to lose but your pants.

OPPOSE INTERNET CENSORSHIP

As I’m sure most anyone actually reading this is aware, there are a pair of bills running through the American legislation process right now that will virtually destroy the internet.  If you happen to be comparatively uninformed or just enjoy clicking links in posts, you can learn a bit more about these terrible acts and how you can oppose them by clicking here, here, and/or here, just to give a few.

As a netlabel devoutly devoted to the dissemination of free art via an unfuckedwith internet, Skrow! openly and voraciously opposes SOPA, PIPA, and any other kind of censorship.

The State of the Skrow Address:

Four score and– er… strike that… a little over five years ago, Skrow!Media came into being with humble beginnings, and has, by the gracious participation of its listeners and submitters, continued to expand and thrive since then, albeit not without the occasional hiatus, extreme delay, or general inconsistency in quantity/frequency of posted releases.

We are here to say that we resolve, for 2012 and beyond (should there prove to be such a thing), to rectify this situation.  Let it be decreed that henceforth, we will strive to post one new release every single week.  Idealistically, I’d love to see this keep up through the entire year, but realistically, I know how things get.  Regardless, the absolute minimum will be one album every month.  Lots of good things on the horizon for us this year, so do hold us to it.

In fact, we’re due for another any time now…
